Active Living

An active living community cares about the health and well-being of its citizens by creating a safer and more convenient environment for them to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives. Seniors, children, and people with physical disabilities especially benefit from safe accessible sidewalks and crosswalks. Communities that have bike lanes and strategically placed bike racks encourage residents to do many of their errands without starting their cars.

Safe routes to school encourage children to walk or ride their bikes. That extra exercise can help a child learn better as well as reduce traffic congestion around school sites. Biking and walking routes to industrial parks and manufacturing areas enable workers to choose active transportation over vehicles. Businesses that have wellness programs or provide opportunities and incentives for exercise observe a reduction in healthcare costs and greater worker productivity. Efforts of this type make Pipestone a more attractive place to live, work, and play.

Pipestone was chosen as one of the 16 recipients of the Safe Routes to School grant awardees in 2011. That year's solicitation resulted in 82 infrastructure applications requesting over $23.3 million in SRTS funds. Our proposal was one of the top quality proposals received from communities all over the state of Minnesota. Pipestone will receive funds totaling $219,828.00 that will be used to connect paths/trails near the Middle/High School to enable students to safely walk/bike to school. Construction on this trail was completed in August 2013.

In April of 2013, Pipestone was again notified from the Minnesota Department of Transportation that it was awarded $245,719.00 in a Safe Routes to School grant. This year's solicitation received 62 applications requesting over $15 million in SRTS funds. Construction on this trail will be completed by September of 2014.
